Chinese tech giant Alibaba has redirected its research efforts by closing its quantum computing laboratory under DAMO Academy, the company’s in-house research initiative. The move involves the donation of the quantum lab and related experimental equipment to Zhejiang University. Alibaba stated that DAMO Academy will continue its emphasis on technology research, aiming to lead in artificial intelligence (AI) research.
The decision to close the quantum lab, along with its 30-member team, is part of Alibaba’s broader restructuring and strategic refocus. Earlier this year, Alibaba announced plans to split its business into six units, with initial intentions to spin off its cloud division. However, this spin-off plan was recently abandoned, and the company’s new CEO, Eddie Wu, emphasized a more independent market approach for each business unit.
While Alibaba is redirecting its efforts away from quantum computing, DAMO Academy’s commitment to advancing AI and machine learning technologies remains steadfast. The academy was established in 2017 to drive research in cutting-edge technologies, and it continues to be a key player in Alibaba’s pursuit of technological leadership.
