The annual General Assembly of the 5G Alliance for Connected Industries and Automation (5G-ACIA), a global 5G industrial alliance, took place in Taiwan, marking the first time the event was hosted in the country. Key industry players such as Bosch, Ericsson, Mitsubishi Electric, Nokia, Qualcomm, and Siemens participated. The assembly facilitated the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between 5G-ACIA and the Taiwan Association of Information and Communication Standards (TAICS), aligning Taiwanese manufacturers with global Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) 5G standards.
The Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) supported the assembly and played a pivotal role in brokering the MoU. The agreement is expected to contribute to the promotion of global standards for 5G smart manufacturing by fostering collaboration between 5G-ACIA and TAICS. Pang-An Ting, General Director of ITRI’s Information and Communications Research Laboratories, emphasized the significance of the event in advancing Taiwan’s access to the global supply chain and market.
Jyuo-Min Shyu, Chairman of TAICS, commended the collaboration, highlighting its potential to facilitate the exchange of technical documents, industrial standards, and developments in 5G smart manufacturing. He emphasized the importance of this collaboration for Taiwan to remain competitive in meeting 5G/6G communication standards set by international telecommunications organization 3GPP.
Dr. Andreas Mueller, General Chair of 5G-ACIA from Bosch, expressed the significance of the collaboration with TAICS as a crucial step in translating Industrial 5G from theory to practice. The aim is to create an innovative ecosystem that sets new benchmarks for wireless connectivity in the industrial domain, expediting the practical implementation of Industrial 5G solutions globally.
The Industrial 5G Day showcased 32 cutting-edge technologies and applications for 5G smart factories. Participants included industry giants like Qualcomm, Ericsson, Nokia, and others, as well as diverse companies such as Hwacom, Jorjin, Sercomm, Ataya, Inventec, Lions, CTOne, Telecom Technology Centre, Tangram, O’Prueba, and Saviah. The demonstration illuminated the potential applications of 5G technology in industrial settings.
5G-ACIA serves as the central global forum for shaping 5G in the industrial domain, bringing together various industries worldwide to create a new ICT and OT ecosystem and establish frameworks for an emerging market.
