PayPal has appointed Shaun Khalfan as its new Senior Vice President and Chief Information Security Officer (CISO). Khalfan, who brings over two decades of experience in information security and risk management, has previously held CISO positions at prominent organizations such as the US Department of Homeland Security, Discover Financial Services, Barclays International, and Freddie Mac.
Having served in various leadership roles in information security, Khalfan’s experience spans across sectors, including government agencies and financial institutions. Prior to joining PayPal, he held the position of CISO at Discover Financial Services, where he focused on reducing cybersecurity risks, enhancing security architecture, and optimizing end-user experience.
Expressing his enthusiasm for his new role, Khalfan highlighted his excitement in securing a global digital company like PayPal. He expressed confidence in the leadership team and growth strategy, emphasizing his commitment to ensuring the security of PayPal’s digital operations on a global scale.
Khalfan is an alumnus of the University of Maryland and the George Washington University School of Business, reflecting his strong educational background in the field of information security and risk management.
According to a 2023 report by Cloudflare, PayPal, along with Meta and Microsoft, is among the brands most frequently impersonated by hackers in phishing scams. These hackers create deceptive domain names resembling those of well-known brands to deceive users and steal their personal information. Other notable targets for hackers identified in the report include Adobe, Amazon, Apple, eBay, Instagram, and Netflix.
