A new and groundbreaking initiative, the Built Environment Innovation Hub (BEIH), has officially opened its doors at the Building and Construction Authority’s (BCA) Braddell Campus. The launch, presided over by Ms. Indranee Rajah, Minister, Prime Minister’s Office, signifies a significant step forward in fostering technological advancements within the built environment industry in Singapore.
The BEIH, established as a hub for innovation and collaboration, is poised to serve multiple crucial purposes:
1. Living Laboratory for Real-World Solutions: One of the pivotal functions of the BEIH is to act as a “living laboratory.” This means that it will facilitate collaboration between industry stakeholders and innovators, enabling them to conduct research, test, and refine solutions within a real-world environment. This approach is invaluable in driving practical advancements in the Built Environment (BE) sector.
2. Exchange and Networking Platform: The BEIH will play a pivotal role in bringing together stakeholders and experts from across the industry through exchange and networking sessions. These gatherings provide a platform for the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and innovative solutions, fostering a vibrant ecosystem of innovation within the BE sector.
3. Accelerate-to-Market Initiatives: The Built Environment Accelerate-to-Market Programme (BEAMP) is a notable initiative housed within the BEIH. BEAMP brings together innovators and industry players to develop technology solutions that address real-world challenges. By bridging the gap between development and market adoption, BEAMP has already supported partnerships with over 60 corporates, startups, and enterprises, leading to the creation of 44 innovative BE solutions. Many of these groundbreaking solutions will be showcased at the BEIH.
One of the remarkable innovations on display is “Sky Wash” by SquareDog Robotics. This commercial robot is designed for cleaning windows in buildings, and it can operate at heights exceeding 40 stories. Sky Wash’s deployment reduces the need for human workers to perform tasks at extreme heights, significantly enhancing safety and reducing operational costs. The robot, already successfully used in Hong Kong, is undergoing Proof of Concepts in Singapore as it progresses towards a commercial rollout.
Another innovation featured at the BEIH is “Robo Painter,” an indoor painting robot developed by SquareDog Robotics in collaboration with China State Construction Engineering. This robot is specially designed for compact interiors and ensures a consistent, high-quality painting finish. What sets it apart is its ability to autonomously navigate through narrow doorways, corridors, and even pass through 20mm high door thresholds. Equipped with a six-axis robotic painting arm, it can access complex interior structures, including ceilings. In addition to enhancing efficiency, Robo Painter also mitigates worker exposure to toxic fumes and solvents, addressing labor shortages effectively.
Lastly, the BEIH signifies the industry’s commitment to transformation and progress. The opening of this innovative space was attended by over 200 environmental professionals, research partners, and innovators who had the opportunity to explore two new Green Mark certified buildings at the BCA Braddell Campus. These buildings serve as showcases
