The University of Nottingham Malaysia (UNM) has expressed its strong support for the Malaysian government’s efforts to promote technology and innovation through its recent budget allocation.
Under the technology and innovation pillar of Budget 2024, a total of RM510 million will be allocated as research and development funds, split between the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry and Higher Education Ministry. This allocation includes RM50 million earmarked as a matching grant for public universities to collaborate with the private sector to stimulate research and innovation activities that can be commercialized.
UNM’s Provost and CEO, Prof. Sarah Metcalfe, commended the government’s emphasis on economic growth led by research, development, and innovation, saying, “Malaysia has great potential in producing cutting-edge research. We believe the additional support of grants and funds is a step in the right direction to address modern-day challenges and advance the nation.”
UNM, rated as a five-star institution under the Malaysian Research Assessment (MyRA) system, plays a crucial role in this aspiration. The university focuses on a wide range of interdisciplinary research areas to create a healthier, more sustainable, and resilient future, addressing global issues while enhancing the lives and livelihoods of people in Malaysia and the ASEAN region.
Prof. Metcalfe noted that universities must adapt to meet the evolving needs of students, employers, Malaysia, and the broader region. The recently announced Malaysia Visa Liberalization Plan, including long-term visit passes for international students who have graduated, aims to make Malaysia an attractive destination for higher education and career opportunities for international students.
To further support Malaysia’s goal of becoming an international higher education hub, UNM has invested in its Future Students Centre in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, which provides resources and convenience for higher education inquiries.
UNM’s strategic plan, focused on people and partnerships, is aimed at enhancing the student experience and teaching and learning excellence at its Semenyih campus. These efforts align with Malaysia’s aspirations to become a regional and global leader in academic and research excellence, contributing to the country’s growth and development.
