The Johor state of Malaysia will see the development of a new data centre campus by Singapore-based ST Telemedia Global Data Centres (STT GDC), its second location in the nation. The STT Johor data centre campus would be located in the Nusa Cemerlang Industrial Park, around 15 km from Singapore, and support up to 120MW in capacity. The expansion aligns with the company’s commitment to advancing Malaysia’s digital transformation.
The STT Johor campus, covering around 89,040 square metres, will incorporate smart energy management systems, AI-enabled cooling, and eco-friendly building materials to ensure carbon-neutral operations. Construction is set to commence in the coming months, with an initial phase of 16MW capacity expected to be completed by 2025. The data centre will leverage its proximity to Singapore to support STT Singapore 5, acting as a regional interconnection hub for clients to connect and exchange traffic.
This move comes shortly after STT GDC’s announcement of its first project in Malaysia through a joint venture with Basis Bay to develop a 20MW campus in the Cyberjaya tech hub. The company views the expansion into Johor as a natural progression to meet the evolving demands of customers for scalable and advanced digital infrastructure, particularly in high-performance computing workloads for AI and visual computing.
As data centre firms focus on Southeast Asia for new investments, STT GDC’s commitment to Malaysia emphasizes the region’s growing significance in the data centre industry. In the first eight months of 2023, Southeast Asia announced 33 more data centre projects than for the entire year of 2022. This indicates that the region is emerging as a major hub for data centre growth and investment.
