Amazon Web Services (AWS) has revealed its plans to launch a new AWS Region in Malaysia, set to go live next year. This significant move is aligned with the Malaysian government’s ambitious Madani Economy Framework, which aims to enhance the living standards of all Malaysians by the year 2030.
AWS has already committed to a substantial 25.5 billion ringgit (S$7.38 billion) investment in the new AWS Region in Malaysia by 2037. The primary goal of this investment is to provide a platform for developers, startups, entrepreneurs, enterprises, government agencies, educational institutions, and nonprofit organizations to run applications and serve end-users from data centers located within the country.
Notably, last year, the Malaysian government inked a cloud framework agreement (CFA) with AWS and its partner, Radmik Solutions Sdn Bhd. This agreement streamlined the procurement model for government departments and agencies to access AWS cloud services, marking a significant step toward digital transformation.
One remarkable success story resulting from this collaboration was the transformation of Pos Malaysia, the national postal and courier service provider, which migrated its IT infrastructure to AWS cloud. This transition led to smoother transactions, the introduction of new digital, customer-centric solutions, and a remarkable 50 percent reduction in IT costs. Sumesh Rahavendra, Pos Malaysia’s Group Chief Digital and Transformation Officer, highlighted that AWS enabled the company to enhance productivity, profitability, and customer experiences.
Another prominent customer, Petronas, has harnessed AWS cloud to enhance and expand its solutions, including SETEL (Malaysia’s first e-wallet for purchasing fuel) and STEAR (a cloud-based logistics solution and services platform for the offshore industry).
Additionally, the digital image stock agency, 123RF, has leveraged AWS to launch an AI image generation service, offering users the power to bring their ideas to life and leading to a 20 percent increase in licensing rates for AI-generated content.
With the forthcoming AWS Malaysia Region, AWS aims to further reduce latency and enhance data compliance, ultimately serving customers more effectively. Pete Murray, AWS Country Manager in Malaysia, expressed the company’s commitment to supporting Malaysia’s journey toward digital leadership in the region, ultimately fostering a better future for all Malaysians. This initiative underscores the pivotal role of cloud technology in driving the success of businesses and organizations across the country.
