The Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA), in collaboration with AI Singapore (AISG) and the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), has introduced the National Multimodal LLM Programme (NMLP) to enhance Singapore’s capabilities in artificial intelligence (AI) research and development (R&D) while fostering AI talent.
The initiative focuses on building a skilled AI workforce by providing funding and access to high-end computing resources for local researchers and engineers. This support is expected to accelerate AI R&D efforts in the country.
The NMLP aims to create a base model with a regional context that can comprehend the unique linguistic characteristics and multi-lingual environment of Southeast Asia. This approach is crucial for developing AI models that are attuned to the linguistic nuances and diversity of the region.
Additionally, the programme serves as a platform for the development of Large Language Model (LLM)-enabled solutions. These solutions are anticipated to contribute to enhanced productivity and the identification of new business opportunities, leveraging the capabilities of advanced language models.
By investing in AI research and talent development, Singapore seeks to establish itself as a hub for cutting-edge AI initiatives. The collaboration between IMDA, AISG, and A*STAR reflects a concerted effort to propel Singapore into a leadership position in the AI landscape, aligning with the nation’s broader strategy of becoming a global player in technology and innovation.
The NMLP not only addresses the immediate need for skilled AI professionals but also lays the foundation for sustained advancements in AI technology. As AI continues to play a transformative role in various industries, Singapore’s commitment to fostering AI research and talent is poised to have long-term implications for the nation’s competitiveness in the global technology arena.
