Jing Shan Primary School in Ang Mo Kio is leading the way in fostering a culture of sustainability among its students through an innovative initiative called the ‘Sprout Spot.’ As one enters the school, it’s impossible to miss the row of tall cases brimming with vibrant, leafy vegetables, showcasing an indoor hydroponics planting system that cultivates baby bak choy, lettuce, mustard greens, and kale.

This unique endeavor is more than just a visual spectacle; it’s an integral part of the school’s Applied Learning Programme, aimed at imparting the values of sustainability through hands-on experiences. The entire campus, including subject lessons and learning spaces, embodies this commitment to environmental stewardship.

Jing Shan Primary School’s Vice-principal, Angela Ng Suat Theng, shared the school’s philosophy, stating that they firmly believe in sustainability as a way of life. Their approach follows a “teach, embed, and live” framework, empowering both students and staff to become catalysts for change. They not only learn about sustainable practices at school but also integrate them into their own homes and communities.

Ms. Ng emphasized the significance of instilling in students the belief that their actions and decisions hold the power to make a meaningful impact. When young minds are inspired to adopt a sustainability mindset, they are more likely to make everyday choices that reflect this ethos.

The ‘Sprout Spot’ at Jing Shan Primary School not only serves as an educational tool but also as a tangible testament to their commitment to sustainability. The school’s dedication to nurturing responsible and environmentally-conscious citizens is a shining example of how educational institutions can play a pivotal role in shaping a sustainable future.
