COSCO, the state-owned multinational conglomerate headquartered in Shanghai, has unveiled the “world’s largest” river-to-sea electric container ship, the Green Water 01. With a massive 10,000+ ton capacity, the vessel represents a milestone in sustainability in the marine logistics industry. Operating between Shanghai and Nanjing along the Yangtze River, the Green Water 01 boasts a remarkable battery capacity of 50,000 kWh, expandable to 80,000 kWh if necessary.
Its electric drive is projected to save 3,900 kilograms of fuel per 100 nautical miles and reduce CO2 emissions by 12.4 tonnes. With a cargo capacity of 700 TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit), the Green Water 01 not only sets records for its size and load capacity but also marks a significant advancement in green shipping technology. COSCO views this project as a model for future environmentally friendly shipping endeavors, with plans underway for a second electric container ship.
