NTT to Double India Data Center Footprint
NTT’s Global Data Centers division is expected to more than double its data center footprint in India over the next three years. The aggressive expansion in India is apart from its plans to expand global data center footprint by 20 percent to cater to the enterprise and hyperscale clients around the world.
With Mumbai 8 going live soon, the Chandivali campus, India’s first operational hyperscale data center park, will reach 85MW of IT load. Over the next 18 months, four new hyperscale data center parks will also become operational: two in Navi Mumbai and one each in Chennai and Delhi, adding approximately 133MW of IT load and 50,000m2 of floorspace. Interconnections for 10 data centers across India will also be rolled out in 2021 and submarine cable landing stations are planned in Mumbai and Chennai. This expansion will further consolidate NTT’s number one position in the Indian market.
Xiaomi Overtakes Apple in Q2 2021 Worldwide Smartphone Sales
Xiaomi’s worldwide smartphone sales overtook Apple in the second quarter, placing Xiaomi at the No. 2 position for the first time, according to Gartner. Xiaomi registered 80.5 percent growth in its smartphone sales owing to a stronger online presence and fast expansion in the global markets beyond Asia/Pacific led by investments in retail channels and partnerships with communication service providers (CSPs). While Apple sales grew 28.3 percent year over year, its market share remained the same as compared to the previous quarter.
Samsung expanded its 5G smartphone lineup at entry and midrange prices to target growth opportunities in 5G segments in the second quarter of 2021. The company maintained the No. 1 position among the top five global smartphone vendors. While it continues to be a market leader, Samsung’s year over year growth slowed due to supply constraints and production disruptions.
As per the recent Gartner study, global smartphone sales to end users totaled 328.8 million units in the second quarter of 2021, an increase of 10.8 percent year over year. Overall, global mobile phone sales grew 10.2 percent despite supply constraints due to Covid-19 related production disruption and component shortages.
