Microsoft to Build up to 100 New Data Centres Every Year
Microsoft is ramping up its cloud game with plans to build 50 to 100 new data centres every year for the foreseeable future.
The company plans to add data centres in at least 10 more countries this year alone, according to Noelle Walsh, Microsoft corporate vice president and leader of the team that builds and operates the company’s cloud infrastructure.
Microsoft already operates more than 200 data centres globally spanning across 34 countries. With its Azure offering, Microsoft is the second-largest public cloud provider in the world after Amazon Web Services (AWS).
Dell to Sell its Cloud Business Boomi for $4 Billion
Dell Technologies has entered into a definitive agreement with private-equity firms Francisco Partners and TPG Capital to buy its cloud business, Boomi, in a $4 billion cash transaction. The company is expected to close the deal by the end of this year.
The PC maker is under pressure to boost profitability after its debt-laden acquisition of data storage provider EMC Corp for $67 billion in 2016 failed to meet financial targets, hurt by intensifying price competition.
Recently, the company also revealed plans to spin off its majority stake in cloud computing software maker VMware, which would trim down its business and make the firm nimbler.
Swiggy Announces Four-Day Work Weeks in May
Food delivery platform Swiggy has implemented a four-day work week during May. Employees will have the flexibility to choose which four days they’d like to work. The move is aimed at supporting the physical and mental well-being of employees who may be dealing with sick relatives or friends.
To deal with possible Covid-related emergencies, the company has set up an emergency support team to help employees access ICUs and oxygen cylinders.
It is also offering a slew of other benefits to its employees, including salary advances, leave encashments, and access to loans. Employees whose family members test positive have access to self-quarantine facilities.
